Q. Can I get the water heaters replaced?
A. We replace water heaters when necessary or when you desire.

When replacing a water heater, we follow these steps:
  1. Cover the carpets we will cross
  2. Remove and dispose of the old water heater
  3. Clean the water heater area
  4. Provide the new water heater
  5. Install new dielectrics
  6. Test with a sniffer for gas leaks
  7. Obtain permits from the city
  8. Arrange for a city inspection

Q. When do we need to replace our water heater?
A. Water heaters usually last 9 to 12 years. However, some people proactively replace their water heaters before they start leaking.

When the tank in a water heater starts leaking, you need to change the water heater. However, a leak can occur from other sources too. Leaks occurring from non-tank sources, such as the heater's drain valve, its temperature and pressure valve, or its inlet or outlet pipes, can be fixed.

Q. There is a puddle on the floor by the water heater. What should I do?
A. If there is a water puddle around the water heater:
  1. Turn the gas control knob (on the gray box near the bottom) to "OFF."
  2. Turn OFF the water valve supplying the water heater (it is usually located on the water line on the top right-hand side).
  3. Hook a hose up to the drain and drain it to a suitable place.
  4. Call Blue Duck Plumbing at 785-856-1152.

Q. My water heater won't light up or stay lit. What do I do?
A. Possible reasons include:
  • You need to get the Thermocouple replaced
  • You need to get the internal and external dust screens cleaned
  • The vial holding that holds the air trap open has burst (Water heaters made by Rheem)
  • You need to get the gas control / thermostat replaced
  • Your water heater has venting issues

Q. What kind of water heaters do you replace?
A. We replace both electric and propane water heaters.

Q. How do I prevent my house from getting flooded by a leaking water heater?
A. You can take these measures:
  1. Have a pan installed under your water heater with a drain going to a floor drain
  2. Have a water alarm installed that will warn you when there is water on the floor
